What Are Advanced Chemical Peels?

As the skin ages, the rate of cell turnover slows down, resulting in the buildup of a thick layer of dead cells. This causes a dull, lackluster appearance commonly associated with aged people. Other signs of ageing include wrinkling, pigmentation, sun damage, loss of volume in the cheeks and lips, age spots and sagging in the jowl area. Chemical peel is a non-invasive procedure by which the damaged skin can be made to look young and glowing all over again. The treatment has been designed to promote cell growth and produce smoother, clearer skin.

Chemical peels can be broadly categorized into alpha-hydroxyacids (AHA), beta-hydroyacids (BHA), salicylic acid, tricholoracetic acid (TCA) and phenol. AHAs and BHAs include Glycolic Acid and Lactic Acid. These are relatively simple peels which remove excess dead skin cells and stimulate collagen production. The ingredients used in the chemical peels basically facilitate fresh skin growth by stimulating the production of Collagen. Collagen is a protein that is present in the connective tissues of the human body, and is responsible for the health of the skin.

Advanced Chemical Peels are very quick procedures, taking a few minutes to complete each session. Depending on the type of peel chosen, gentle flaking is often seen for two to three days. This can easily be camouflaged with moisturizers. Some downtime can be expected if deep peeling is performed to reduce difficult pigmentation.

Advanced Chemical Peels have been known to increase skin sensitivity when exposed to sunlight. Optimal sun protection is essential during and after the peeling process. Sun exposure without inadequate protection can result in worsening of the existing pigmentation. However, this is a situation with most aesthetic treatments, including PL and laser treatment. Many people are concerned about permanent skin thinning after chemical peels. Although the excess dead skin cells are sloughed off in the process, this actually triggers the skin to produce more collagen, hence increasing skin thickness and produces a lifting effect.
